Let's Compare Cal Poly and Sac State

Recall: BA vs BS

Cal Poly Source:

A bachelor of arts require 18 quarter upper division major units equivalent to 12 semester upper division major units.

A bachelor of science require 27 quarter upper division major units equivalent to 18 semester upper division major units.

All bachelor requires 60 quarter upper division units equivalent to 40 semester upper division units.

Sac State Source:

A bachelor of arts require 24 semester upper division major units.

A bachelor of science require 36 semester upper division major units.

All bachelor requires 40 semester upper division units. (Most people get 42 upper division units because most classes are in multiple of 3's).

When comparing the results, we see that Sac State's minimum major requirement is double that of Cal Poly, but if we are to look at the individual majors, the difference is usually smaller. Note that Cal Poly is not the only institution with such relatively low minimum requirements for BA and BS degree. It is only one example to show the absolute minimum requirement for a degree. However, what I'm trying to say is that the minimum requirement for a major at one institution is only the minimum requirement for a minor (or concentration) at another institution.

Note that most federal government jobs list as needed a minimum of 18 [semester] upper division major units.
