Cut Down Undergraduate Requirements, and Increase Graduate Requirements



We should cut down the requirements of American Undergraduate Degrees by looking at their bare minimum. Throw away the unit requirement and only keep the general education requirement and major requirements. We should also rebuild Graduate Degrees.

  1. Associate Degree (1.5 Year)
    1. 18 Units General Education
    2. 18 Units in Major
    3. New total of 36 Units 
      1. Becomes 12 Units per Semester for 3 Semesters
  2. Bachelor Degree (3 Year)
    1. 36 Units General Education
      1. 6 Units English Composition
      2. 3 Units Mathematics
      3. 9 Units Science
        1. 3 Units Natural Science
        2. 3 Units Life Science
        3. 3 Units Laboratory
          1. Make Laboratory a full course instead of 1 unit attachments to Lecture course.
      4. 18 Units Fine Arts/Humanities/Social Science
        1. 3 Units Fine Arts
        2. 3 Units Humanities
        3. 3 Units US Government
        4. 6 Units US History
    2. Bachelor of Arts
      1. 30 Units in Major
        1. Increased so that Lower Division Units from Associate Degree don't get wasted
          1. Traditionally, only 12 Lower Division is required for Bachelor of Arts, but 18 Lower Division is required for Associate.
        2. 12 Upper Division
      2. 6 Units Foreign Language
      3. New Total of 72 Units 
        1. Becomes 12 Units per Semester for 6 Semesters
    3. Bachelor of Science
      1. 36 Units in Major
        1. 18 Upper Division
      2. New Total of 72 Units
        1. Becomes 12 Units per Semester for 6 Semesters
  3. Master Degree (2 Year)
    1. 36 Graduate Units
      1. Up to 36 Graduate Units instead of 15 Graduate Units beyond Bachelor
      2. Up to 36 Units instead of 30 Units Total.
      3. Becomes 9 Graduate Units per Semester for 4 Semesters.
  4. Intermediate Graduate Qualification (3 Year /  1 Year after Master)
    1. 18 Graduate Units beyond Master or 54 Graduate Units beyond Bachelor
      1. Up from 45 Graduate Units beyond Bachelor
      2. Down to 54 Units instead of 60 Units Total.
      3. Becomes 9 Graduate Units per Semester for 6 Semesters.
  5. Doctorate (5 Year)
    1. 36 Graduate Unit beyond Intermediate Graduate Qualification / 54 Graduate Unit beyond Master /90 Graduate Unit beyond Bachelor
      1. Up to 90 Graduate Units instead of 72 Graduate Units
      2. Becomes 9 Graduate Units per Semester for 10 Semesters.

  •  Full-Time
    • 12 Undergraduate Unit per Term
    • 9 Graduate Unit per Term
    • 24 Undergraduate Unit per Year / 36 Undergraduate Quarter Unit per Year
    • 18 Graduate Unit per Year / 27 Graduate Quarter Unit per Year
  • Part-Time
    • 6 Unit per Term
    • 12 Unit per Year / 18 Quarter Unit per Year
